Demonstrations in Georgia against Saakashvili’s regime

A massive protests associated with the dispersal of the demonstrators by Soviet troops 20 years ago took place in Tbilisi 9th of April. This rally was announced as a: “Clean hands”, meaning freedom from corruption and turn to the true democracy. By some estimates, 60 thousands of people took part in the demonstration, hundreds of them stayed in the city center for the whole night long.
Organizers of the demonstration called for the resignation of Mikheil Saakashvili from the post of the president. Otherwise they keep on protesting. They gave Saakashvili time until 11 hours GTM to make a decision.
According to the protesters, it was Saakashvili who provoked a conflict with Russia in August 2008 and let the country sink into the mire of crisis.
Past Thursday Saakashvili said that he has no intention to abdicate. But especially on the eve of protests  his methods are far from democratic ones, so that makes even people who believed in him to be disappointed.  For instance, the number of arrests took place in different regions of Georgia shortly before 9th of April. Moreover police surrounded the city not to let “the provincials” to join the demonstration.
The evening before the protests the access to the Internet was cut off all over the city. So the only source of information was progovernmental TV-channels, who present an opposition as a terrorist organization.
At the same time Georgian authorities keep their soldiers in a complete information vacuum, they are even not allowed to use their cell phones, kavkaz-uzel.ru reports.
While Georgian president scare his compatriots with war, but not a civil war, a war with a “foreign aggressor” his opponents hold meeting with foreign diplomats. They addressed mainly with two principal request to diplomats, to convince authorities not to use force against demonstrators and not to interfere in the internal affaires of the country.
Today at the end of ultimatum, that was delivered to Saakashvili by opposition, Georgian president still didn’t give a clear answer on it, but he called the opposition on dialogue.
The deadline of the ultimatum is already expired. If opposition doesn’t get answer to it, they plan to start more decisive actions, Interpressnews reports. According to the participants of the demonstration, one of those actions may be picketing of the public offices.
