MO*lecture: The Future of Pakistan

23 October - 7.30 pm - @deBuren - Brussels

Pakistan has elected a new government with Nawaz Sharif as Prime Minister, and a new President has taken office. This year, the country should also get a new Chief Justice and a new Chief of Army Staff. Do all these changes at the top launch Pakistan towards a new and more promising future, or will the country struggle on and continue to be confronted with extremism, violence and poverty? What is the impact of the withdrawal of the international occupation troops from neighboring Afghanistan? And does Nawaz Sharif has a plan to switch the economic power back on? The answers to these questions do not only matter for the world, but, especially, mark major differences in the everyday lives of not a small part of Pakistan’s 180 million people.

The introduction to this conference will be given by Omar Waraich, who covers Pakistan for TIME, while also contributing to The Independent and The Economist Intelligence Unit. He also appears as commentator on news channels such as CNN, NPR, Sky News, BBC World Service and Al-Jazeera English. Omar Waraich will be coming to this conference straight from Islamabad, providing participants with cutting edge knowledge and insight in the latest developments in Pakistan.

He will be joined by two Brussels based journalists: Shada Islam  (Director of Policy at Friends of Europe, an independent think tank in Brussels, and Europe correspondent for DAWN Newspaper, Pakistan) and Khalid Hameed Farooqi (Brussels bureau chief of Geo TV, one of Pakistans main news channels). They will add their analysis, and open up the debate with Omar Waraich.

Masters of ceremony are two Belgian experts on the region: Bruno De Cordier (researcher at the Conflict Research Group, University Ghent; author of among others two books on Central Asia) and Gie Goris (editor-in-chief MO* magazine; author of a book on Afghanistan, Pakistan and Kashmir).
