Marie Geukens

Marie Geukens (°1970) studied Germanic Languages ​​at the KULeuven and later journalism at the VUB. She lived and worked successively in Hungary, Syria, Canada, Belgium and Rwanda, as a teacher, resettlement officer at UNHCR, editor for the English-language television magazine Fans of Flanders on OP12 and Canvas. She co-wrote the book Expat Partner, staying active, finding work and made the documentary De Kerk in het Midden, a snapshot of life in the Marollen.

Marie Geukens knows the civil society organisations from her time as a fundraiser at, among others, testament.be, a communication campaign about donating through legacies, which she helped setting up in 2007.

As a journalist for the magazine Marie Claire, she went to South-East Turkey in 2016 in search of emancipated Syrian widows and reported on the use of EU money flows to Turkey. From 2017 to 2021, she was editor-in-chief of that magazine. She then left for Rwanda, where she had the last Rwandan women who lived with a Belgian colonial testify. She is now preparing a podcast series about bigamy.

She has been at the helm of MO* since January 6th 2025.
