The urgent need to accelerate sustainable transition in Africa: are cooperatives fit for purpose?
Together with Fredrick Wanyama of Maseno University in Kenya, Patrick Develtere conducted the first ever Africa-wide research project on cooperatives in Africa. Their 2008 book, 'Cooperating Out Of Poverty – The Renaissance of the African Cooperative Movement' was published by the International Labour Office and the World Bank Institute.
Together with a team of 18 researchers they are doing this exercise and are now finalizing their investigation into the current state of play of the African cooperative scene. Patrick will be our speaker. He is Professor International Cooperation at the University of Leuven, Belgium. He has been active in civil society and cooperative movements in Belgium and around the world during the whole of his career as a professional as well as a volunteer.
This session will be introduced by Joseph Njuguna, Director of Policy at the International Cooperative Alliance (ICA)
