Creating Value from Waste

Plastic waste is one of today's biggest environmental challenges, but science may hold the key. We invite you to a panel discussion that explores a promising part of the answer: chemical recycling of plastics.

On 28 May, researchers, industry representatives, and policy experts come together at UCSIA to discuss the potential of chemical recycling of PET plastic, and what it could mean for countries like Tunisia.

The starting point is the work of Makram Elabed, a PhD student at the University of Sfax and the University of Antwerp, and a UCSIA Scholarship Fund Bruyns Fellow. His research focuses on breaking down PET plastic into its basic components and turning them into high-value materials. This process could help move us towards a true circular economy.

Prof. Pieter Billen (University of Antwerp) will set the scene with an introductory lecture on the conditions for a flourishing chemical recycling industry, and whether emerging markets like Tunisia could play a key role.

The panel discussion that follows brings together:

Julia Wagner
European Commission (DG Middle East, North Africa and the Gulf)

Prof. Wim Deferme
Professor at the Institute of Materials Research, University of Hasselt

Qaisar Hijazin
Secretary General Arab-Belgian-Luxembourg Chamber of Commerce

Samira Benali
Researcher, University of Mons

Moderated by Prof. Philippe Nimmegeers (University of Antwerp).
